OTN Transport and FEC
As enterprises continue the trend of building IP/Ethernet oriented networks, these enterprises, as well as service providers and carriers, must address the convergence of circuit switched and packet switched networks, and improve network management elements to support bandwidth-hungry, delay-sensitive applications such as streaming video.
The Optical Transport Network standard (OTN or ITU-T G.709) was created to help equipment manufacturers address such challenges by supporting Ethernet data rates.
The Cortina standards-based Optical Transport Framers offer a complete solution for OTN applications and are commonly used in metro, long-haul, and submarine applications. The devices combine ITU-T standards compliant framing and overhead processing with forward error correction that provides up to 9 dB of coding gain.
Figure 1 illustrates a DWDM Muxponder style application making use of the Cortina IXF30009, which has direct connection to serial optics on both line and system side.

Table 1 describes Cortina’s Transport and FEC products in more detail. All products come with a flavour of FEC and provide an OIF Compliant interface.
