Sunnyvale, Calif., September 8, 2010 — Cortina Systems, Inc. (Cortina), delivering innovative technologies that link people and networks worldwide, today announced the industry’s first 10G EPON device, the Cortina Systems® CS8120 10G EPON OLT, designed for high-volume deployments. With 1G EPON now successfully deployed, service providers have been waiting for 10G EPON to offer more advanced services to their users. The Cortina 10G EPON device, the 3rd generation EPON OLT with integrated switching, will enable this evolution in bandwidth by seamlessly upgrading from 1G to 10G while keeping BOM cost down.
Since the bandwidth on each PON link is shared among many users, especially in the case of multi-family building deployments, the upgrade to 10G benefits subscribers using bandwidth demanding services like HDTV. 10G EPON allows each link to serve more users, which lowers equipment costs. PON networks are often upgraded at the OLT first, and then as new services are rolled out, the ONTs are gradually replaced. With the Cortina Systems® CS8120 10G EPON OLT, both 1G and 10G ONTs can coexist on the same optical branch.
“As consumers push the paradigm shift to the digital world with more and more images, sounds, and videos converting to digital data that can be stored, shared, manipulated, and transmitted, there is a need for high bandwidth access networks,” said Fred Olsson, Director, Access Business Unit at Cortina. “Cortina is a leading supplier in the 10G Fiber-To-The-Home market by enabling service providers to upgrade their networks to 10G while keeping their OLT line card cost down by integrating the switching and advanced traffic management into the PON MAC IC.”
CS8120
The Cortina Systems® CS8120 is the 3rd generation EPON OLT. This OLT device allows efficient equipment upgrade to 10G thru native connectivity to 10G backplanes. To reduce BOM cost and lower power consumption, the CS8120 integrates the MAC, switch, and traffic management into a single chip. To manage the increase in bandwidth, the CS8120 has advance traffic management implementing hierarchy schedulers, multi-level shaping, policing, rate limiting, and subscriber/service-based bandwidth management. The CS8120 is compliant with the latest carrier specifications (e.g. CTC v2.1). Unlike programmable FPGA solutions for prototyping, the CS8120 is a production-worthy integrated device.
The CS8120 is currently sampling to multiple customers and will be production released later this year.
